Sunflowers Galore – JSCG

Progress on the Jane Street Community Garden logo. More on that found here.

So I’ve gotten some feedback on my logo thumbnails and the favourite seemed to be the sunflower.

I’ve been doing a little bit more research on the sunflower to help me experiment and understand the design better.

It turns out there is over 30 different types of sunflower and there are many variations with the look from colour and shape of each aspect of the plant.

Even looking at a list of Ttop 10 Sunny Sunflower Varieties’ from birds & bloom there was a lot of different things to consider.

I decided to stay with my original drawing for now and take inspiration from the kind of typical looking sunflowers that usually pop up in a Google search of ‘sunflowers’.

After looking at a few images I liked the idea of the longer petals like I had drawn so in my thumbnail sketches so I tried to go a little further and played around a little in illustrator.

The first image was an image trace of the original sunflower. If it was used it would need a bit of a clean up but I think it’s an interesting starting point as it is. Especially as it has a slight grungy feel thanks to the cuts in the lines.

The next image has a very hippy feel compared to the last. It is a lot more simple and much less detailed. There would be slight issues if colour was added as none of the lines touch and could make it look weird but as I continue experimenting only time will tell how that will turn out..

I think at the stage that they are at. Both experiments with the sunflower have their own strengths and both need to be worked on to improve.

I still want to try and recreate the drawing a few different ways to open my options up with this flower.

It would also be interesting when colour is added because colours can still be experimented with at the time being. I can essentially try and recreate a large amount of different sunflowers all based from colours.
